Master Naturalist Class

The Wisconsin Master Naturalist program is a network of well-informed volunteers dedicated to conservation service, leadership, and lifelong learning. The Master Naturalist training provides 40 hours of education in a variety of natural history topics and Master Naturalist service areas. Through expert-led trainings, Master Naturalists are equipped to address challenges facing the state by making positive impacts through stewardship, citizen science, and educational activities. Trainings have an emphasis on outdoor field experiences with some classroom instruction and are taught by professional natural resources educators and scientists. Once trained, Wisconsin Master Naturalists record 40 hours of service and 8 hours of advanced training each year to maintain certification and receive a recognition pin.

Course Description

Join us near the Wisconsin Dells to become a certified Wisconsin Master Naturalist. This intensive training utilizes our unique 318-acre site, including the old-growth forests and unique geology of the Blackhawk Island State Natural Area, as your living classroom.

What You Will Experience

Participants will explore Master Naturalist topics through three focal points:

  • Learning through Place: Experiential, hands-on education about local ecology and unique geological features.
  • Land Stewardship: Developing a personal conservation ethic and understanding our role in the environment.
  • Service Opportunities: Preparing for service in youth education, conservation work, and outdoor recreation.

Program Highlights

Cultural Connection: A facilitated traditional art project connecting to the land and Ho-Chunk culture.

Expert Guest Speakers from conservation institutions (e.g., Aldo Leopold Foundation, Mirror Lake State Park Friends Group).

Field Activities: Macro-invertebrate river investigations and Microclimate experiments.

  • Time: 8:30-4:30 (except final Saturday is 8:30-1:30pm)
