Ever wonder…what is that tree growing in your backyard? Become a dendrologist, a tree expert!  Students will discover the different uses among Wisconsin’s tree species and the importance of tree identification. Students will learn about tree structure: leaves, bark, twigs, buds, and tree shape. They will then use a dichotomous key to explore and identify the many trees at Upham Woods.

Accessibility notes: This outdoor-based class has a tree course that goes around the craft building then takes the riverbend trail to the ranger mac benches. The area around the craft building is accessible but the riverbend trail is narrow and uneven. For people with mobility concerns we can create an alternative course along any of our trails, including paved trails between buildings or along our boardwalk. Please see our trail descriptions on our accessibility page to choose a trail that meets your mobility needs. If individuals need indoor options we can collect branches from trees that can be identified using the dichotomous key.
